January 14, 2014 | Leave a Comment |

When entering sweepstakes, it can be inspiring to hear the stories of those who have actually won. We at SweepstakesFanatics were lucky enough to interview Katherine Carvalho, who recently was announced as the Grand Prize Winner of the 2013 Allstate Ultimate Road Trip Sweepstakes.

As part of the prize package, Katherine won a a 2014 Buick Enclave as well as trips to the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans and the 2014 BCS National Championships in California.

Here is the interview with Katherine.

To begin, could you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m Katharine Carvalho. I’m 18 and a freshman at TCU as a nursing major. We moved to Forth Worth, me and my family moved here, about 2 years ago from Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

Were you an avid sweeper before you won the Allstate Ultimate Road Trip Sweepstakes?
No, I’ve never actually won anything! I actually have the worst luck with it. It just so happened all the stars aligned one time and I signed up for this contest. So, I’ve never been an avid sweeper.

Why did you enter the Allstate Ultimate Road Trip Sweepstakes?
I actually went to do it because they were giving out free T-shirts. I actually really wanted a free T-shirt.

What was the first thing that went thru your mind when you found out you’d won the Allstate Ultimate Road Trip Sweepstakes?
That’s a great question. I’m actually thinking back to it now. I mean the first thing on my mind was – “How did I win this?” because at the time [of notification] it was probably four months after. So I was like okay, and then I remembered signing up for it. I’m in shock now. I can’t believe that I actually won it, and that big of a prize too. It was amazing.

Do you remember how many entries you submitted to the Allstate Ultimate Road Trip Promotion?
I submitted one.

What was your favorite part of the trip to the Sugar Bowl?
My favorite part had to be of course meeting Kirk Herbstreit – that was out of this world awesome. Also I’ve never been to New Orleans before so to be able to go and experience a a new place like that was a lot of fun to do with my sister and my dad and my college friends.

Who were you rooting for in the Sugar Bowl, Alabama or Oklahoma?
I was rooting for OU. They were a great team and I’m glad they won.

What else did you do while you were in New Orleans?
In New Orleans, we definitely explored around the city. We went on Royal Street and Bourbon Street. We went to Cafe Du Mond which was a lot of fun and got beignets. We kind of just took up the whole culture.

Have you received the Buick Enclave yet?
No, that’s gonna be next week that I’ll be receiving that. But I am really excited about that because I actually don’t have a car right now.

How is having a new vehicle going to change your life?
Oh my gosh – its going to change it completely! I’ll be able to have a car again. Especially being a freshman in college it’s difficult to get around. I’ve never had a brand new car so that’s going to be really cool.

What happened was I totaled my other car, and we were going to get another one with the money from the total. But that same week it was announced that I won [the Buick] so instead of paying for a new car we just took the money from the total for the taxes. So it really worked out to where it kind of solved my own problems.

Some people are hesitant to enter bigger sweepstakes because of the taxes. Do you think they should be wary, or do you think that the big prize win is worth the hassle?
I think they’re definitely still worth it. I mean because even though you still have to pay taxes, the experience I had last week was honestly one I’d never be able to have again. Just even the feeling that you won something makes you feel so much better about yourself.

Katharine

Do you have any secrets to winning sweepstakes?
I think the secret is to not really focus on it too much because I feel that you psych yourself out. But you know, just have a lot of confidence in yourself and be humble. Definitely be humble. That’s the biggest thing.

Do you have any other advice or tips for other people on winning sweepstakes and contests?
I mean I think it takes a lot of luck I’ll be honest. Because I’m gonna look back on this in 5 years and be like – how did this ever happen to me?
